SoEun (Sonya) Park
Founder

Hi! My name is SoEun Park, but I also go by my nickname Sonya. I’m a first-year at Harvard who is concentrating in Government and Sociology. I’m the founder of this organization, Stairway For Ballet, a 501(c)3 organization that gives free online ballet classes to children, especially those who can’t afford them. I was born in Korea but moved to Michigan at the age of ten. I started ballet at six and have fallen in love with it ever since. Then when I moved to Michigan, I continued training at Valentina’s School of Ballet and picked up contemporary dance. I worked with teachers from across the country and internationally in summer programs at the studio. I also participated in various ballet competitions, such as Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) and World Ballet Arts Competition (WBAC), performing solo and group numbers. Currently, I’m part of the Harvard Ballet Company. Other than dance, I’m interested in international relations and foreign policy. I would love to find myself in an endeavor where I can champion human rights in the future. Outside of ballet, I’m part of student organizations such as Harvard Undergraduate Foreign Policy Initiative (HUFPI), WHRB (Harvard Radio Broadcasting), and Harvard Korean Association (HKA). I’m excited to strategize community-building initiatives and help others into community-engaged commitments while building communities of public service, especially in the realm of performing arts and ballet. I’m also really excited about this organization and its future prospects. In my pastime, I love traveling and listening to podcasts.

Olivia Morelli
Student Coordinator

Hello, my name is Olivia Morelli and I am a first year student at Indiana University studying Finance and Public Policy Analysis. I grew up in Troy, Michigan, and I have been heavily involved in the dance world since the age of three, training in a large variety of styles, namely ballet, pointe, and contemporary. Through my training, I have come to learn how the arts can connect people from all walks of life, and I am lucky to have forged close relationships with my teammates and peers through our love of dance. In addition to experience as a competition dancer, I have been teaching dance for the past four years through a program called My Time to Shine. In this program, I have instructed and aided in movement and dance classes for students with disabilities, working to make the dance community more accessible for all. Also, I have been volunteering as the Student Coordinator at Stairway For Ballet, and deciding to get involved with the program because of my passion for equality in education, particularly in the arts. Tangent to my involvement in ballet, I am involved on campus through the Finance Diversity Program, the international NGO Charity: Water at IU, and a student-run investment firm, the Envision Capital Management Group. I believe that by harnessing the knowledge of economics and business, she can work to create a more sustainable, fair, and just world. In my free time, I love to scuba dive, bike ride, ski, and do yoga!

Maria (Mia) Steis
Volunteer Coordinator

Hello! My name is Mia and I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Stairway for Ballet. I am a freshman at Boston University and am studying Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in nanotechnology. I am also part of the Harvard Ballet Company. I grew up in Arlington, Virginia where I trained at the Adagio Ballet School of Dance and later at Virginia Dance Conservatory. To expand on my training, I attended the Kirov Ballet Academy and Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensives, as well as partook in The Danzante Contemporary Trainee program. In 2020 I founded Mia's Mini Ballet School, which offers quality ballet and contemporary training for students ages 5-9. Through this process I gained valuable entrepreneurial and management skills as well as a love for teaching and community outreach. Through teaching and my involvement in Stairway for Ballet I hope to spread my passion for dance and inspire students to express themselves and feel comfortable in their identity. Outside of dancing and teaching, I enjoy running, skiing and hiking, and theatre.
